About UI & Interface icons

The functional set: arrows and directional marks, flags, buttons, avatars, faces, files and the controls an interface is assembled from. These are searched for by what they do rather than what they are, so the naming leans on function.

Where these get used

Product interfaces, dashboards and design systems, which is the one context where consistency is not a nice to have. A design system needs its arrows to match its buttons to match its file icons, and mixing sources shows immediately at small sizes. Navigation, empty states, onboarding steps and toolbars all draw from here. Documentation uses the arrow and file sets for structure, and admin tools use the whole category, because an admin interface is mostly controls and very little decoration. Mobile apps use them across tab bars and settings screens, where the same icon appears on every screen and any inconsistency compounds. Design system documentation uses them as examples, and internal tools use them heavily, because an internal tool is judged on clarity rather than decoration.
