Twenty-two islands, and nearly all of them are named territories rather than a palm tree on a sandbank. Canary, Faroe, Cayman, Cook, Azores, Aland, Ascension, Clipperton, the British Virgin Islands, Heard Island. That makes the set useful for something a generic island never is: travel guides, shipping routes, jurisdiction maps, offshore finance pages and conservation sites that need to point at a real place. Tour operators and geography resources both benefit from an island that is somewhere. The plain island is there for the metaphor, which is usually a page about isolation or a page about a holiday, and never about the Faroes.
